Indigenous Peoples demands Rights in Paris Climate Accord and end to False Solutions

During the COP21 climate talks in Paris, Indigenous Peoples from the Arctic to the Amazon and their allies have continually gathered to demand genuine climate change solutions: which to be truly effective must include both the recognition and protection of Indigenous Rights in the operative, legally binding text of the draft Paris Accord, and the application of bottom-up initiatives originating in Indigenous knowledge, culture, and spirituality. It seems, however, that these powerful objections/demonstrations have been totally ignored – as the first week of negotiations closed on Friday with the language concerning the traditional knowledge and rights of Indigenous Peoples being “annexed” (meaning they’re not completely in the draft agreement, nor are they fully excluded), rendering their future inclusion highly […]

5 Years after the BP Gulf disaster: Remember, Reflect, Reimagine

5 years ago today I sat with Clayton Thomas Mueller and George Poitras in rural Wales, both stranded in the UK after the BP Annual General Meeting. In the wake of the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, all planes were grounded for a week.  After a walk on the moors we came back to hear the news of the oil rig that had exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. We watched on the live stream as plumes of petroleum spewed into the ocean. Just 4 days prior we had sat in the BP Annual General meeting, telling shareholders about the climatic devastation being caused by tar sands.  An older gentleman in the audience piped up, stating his concerns about the cement being used for […]

BP attempts to silence Community Resistance to BP’s ‘Extreme Energy’ at Annual General Meeting

Five years after the Deepwater Horizon Disaster, representative of devastated communities from Gulf Coast confronts BP board over failure to address environmental and social damage. Solidarity activists refused entry into the meeting.    Suzanne Dhaliwal (UK Tar Sands Network) on +44 (0)7772694327 Today, outside the BP Annual General Meeting, UK Tar Sands Network, CoResist and Rising Tide held up a 30ft colourful fishing net decorated with messages, images, and slogans from the coastal communities who still feel the impacts of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Fossil Free-dom Fighters Join in Solidarity

Dear Fossil Free-dom Fighters, Crystal Lameman from the Beaver Lake Cree Nation and I are writing to you from the road with the fine People and Planet folks. We have been meeting with students, climate justice activists and friends to talk about how we can deepen the links of the amazing Divestment movement with frontline resistance to devastating energy extraction at the source. Fossil Fuel companies are wreaking havoc on the lands of First Nations communities in Canada and since 2010 we have been speaking truth to corporate power at the BP Annual General Meeting. 5 years ago, just days after that meeting the Gulf was devastated by the biggest offshore spill in history as a BP well exploded. Since then […]

Tar Sands Devastation Unveiled outside Canada Europe Energy Roundtable

Tuesday November 18th, 2014. A coalition of climate and social justice organizations and artists held a silent presence and unveiled a large landscape which depicts the devastation caused by Canadian tar sands outside the Canada Europe Energy Roundtable this morning. “Communities from across the UK have come together to make this banner to show our solidarity with those communities on the front lines of tar sands who have lived for generations in close relationship with the land” said Amanda Cid, a community artist “it is important to make visible the animal species and cultures that are being pushed to extinction because of decisions being made behind closed doors between industry and government.” The Canadian government has embarked on a […]

TAKE ACTION: ask your MP to say NO to tar sands and support the Fuel Quality Directive

With the EU Fuel Quality Directive coming to a head, we need to put pressure on the UK government to ensure the FQD is effective at discouraging imports of high-emission fuels, including fuel derived from tar sands. We want the UK to support a measure to correctly label tar sands fuel as more polluting than conventional oil, a measure which is also supported by First Nations communities bearing the brunt of the associated local environmental destruction. YOUR help is very much needed, as we try to get MPs to sign this Early Day Motion. Please help us and email your MP, using this online tool – http://peopleandplanet.org/navid16352. A few clicks is all it takes!
